Course purpose

The purposes of this course to enable Learners understand the most pressing issues facing economies in today’s world such as growth and stagnation among others.

 

Expected Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, the learner should be able to:

  1. Apply Economic concepts in  economic development
  2. Apply the knowledge and skills acquired to solve economics problems in life
  3. Handle higher level courses in development economics

 

Course content

Importance of agriculture in economic development; the food problem and growth of  labour force; comparative analysis of agrarian system in Latin America, Africa and Asia. Economic development; meaning of economic growth and economic development. International economic issues; the peasant export conflicting views, institutional background (WTO, UNCTAD and the World Bank); current problems of primary exporters. Domestic economic issues; role of government; planning and administration; emphasis on industrialization and economic planning. Technology and resource endowment; strategies for agricultural and rural development technology and innovation-the green revolution; the uni-model and bimodal approach; the institutional framework. Case studies.
